How to make a skirt from wide pants. With a slight movement of the hand, the trousers turn... into an elegant skirt! Making a denim miniskirt with slits from jeans: master class

Created 12/07/2015

Altering clothes is far from a sign of poverty. Although, of course, often such a need arises due to a lack of funds for new things. Therefore, old ones are used: frayed jeans are repaired or cut, dresses are sewn from shirts, coats are converted into jackets, and so on.

But turning one old wardrobe item into another new one is also a creative process. A lot of interesting ideas can arise. And these clothes were not necessarily worn. Perhaps the item was purchased and did not fit in size. And something that cannot be worn as is can be remade into something completely different, or modified or decorated.

If not everyone, then many, cut their jeans to shorts. Have you ever made a dress from trousers or jeans? No? Then you can’t even imagine what interesting models you can get.

We sew a dress from trousers

Method number 1: flaps or stripes

It is logical that trouser legs are pieces of fabric from which a dress can be cut in the same way as from a whole piece of material. Only this will not be a one-piece model, because we are limited by the cut of the trousers.

First, we wash the trousers, if necessary, after drying, we cut out the fabric at the seams without any flaws (scuffs, stains, snags, holes).

The dress will have to be assembled from small parts. Choose a pattern with details that will fit on the trouser sections.

Tapered trousers alone are hardly enough for a dress, unless you are making it for a little girl. Therefore, you will have to combine two, or even more. In this case, the fabric should be approximately the same thickness and, naturally, match in color, texture or pattern.

Example of a two-pants dress

We used trousers made of the same plain thick stretch fabric in different colors: black and red. The dress was sewn, so to speak, at random, without a pattern. A different black stretch fabric is used for the sleeves, neckline and hem stitching.

1, 2. Trim the seams around the perimeter of the trouser legs. We get 8 pieces of fabric: 4 black, 4 red.

3, 4, 5. Make the middle of the dress red. We cut a strip for the front and back. If the length of the whole piece is not enough, we make it from parts. You can do embroidery.

6, 7. Cut out the side parts of the front. We attach two side parts to the middle part of the front.

8, 9. Draw an armhole line on one side. Cut it out. Fold the piece in half, trace the armhole on the second piece and cut it out. We correct the side line, cut off the excess.

10. Level the bottom.

11. The front of the dress is ready.

12. Place the middle back piece on the black strip of fabric (overlapping edges), trace along the edge of the middle piece.

13. So we cut out the two side parts of the back.

14. Sew the middle back piece to the sides.

15. Place it on the back in front of the right sides inwards, along the front we draw a line for the bottom and armholes on the back.

16. Fold the back in half, facing inward, draw a side line.

17. The back of the dress is ready.

18, 19. We sew the back with the front, folding the parts face to face, along the side seams. We measure. We identify excesses, remove them, correct them.

20. We cut out the sleeve from unnecessary fabric, baste, measure, and adjust.

21. Tear off, cut according to the markings and get a sleeve pattern. Using these patterns, we cut out the parts from the prepared fabric (4 in total).

22. Sew along one side.

23. Attaching to the armhole.

24. Sew the sleeves. We hem their bottoms.

25. Sew a strip folded in half lengthwise to the neckline. Insert a wide elastic band.

You can also sew a strip of fabric that was used for the sleeves to the bottom of the dress. This is the dress made from trousers.

The stripes make this cute sundress with a drawstring.

The dress can be sewn according to this principle: cut the pattern into strips, as shown in the figure, then cut these parts from the trousers.

You can first stitch the fabric from the stripes, and then cut out the details of the dress.

Method number 2: use the top of the trousers as the original part of the dress

Wide-leg trousers or, especially, large-sized men's trousers provide more options. The part with the belt can be used both on top of the dress and on the bottom. See original ideas.

Method number 3: pants are a dress

From very wide knitted trousers with an elastic band, just the kind in which you can easily fit into the trouser leg, you can sew such a stylish dress.

Everything is done very simply. Place one pant leg on your body and the other on your arm.

Mark the width of the bottom of the sleeve.

Model the line of the sleeve. Sew a stitch from the bottom of the trouser leg to the bottom of the middle seams of the pants.

Trim off excess fabric and trim the edge.

We sew a dress from jeans

The simplest dress can be made if you rip the crotch seam of the jeans and turn them around so that the side seams are in the middle and the crotch seams are on the sides. We draw straight lines at the top as in the figure. We sew the seams. Then we adjust it according to the figure.

You can also sew fabrics from strips cut from several pairs of jeans. Then sew a dress from these fabrics.

A dress or cape made from jeans made using the patchwork method would be interesting.

The combination of jeans with another fabric will look original.

You can make such a sundress from one pair of jeans.

To do this, you need to open the middle and step seams. Draw the lines as in the photo. Trim along these lines. These pieces will be the middle front and back seams. The belt will be at the bottom of the sundress. You can add fabric in the middle.

You can also safely combine different colors of jeans, do not process the armholes and neck of the dress, or make abrasions.

If you have a pair of unnecessary trousers lying around in your wardrobe, don’t rush to throw them away right away. Old pants can always be repurposed into an incredibly fashionable and elegant skirt. To do this, you will need a minimum amount of money, time and creativity. And so that you know how to sew a skirt from trousers, we have selected several step-by-step master classes for you. By putting them into practice, you can make a stylish and unique thing, even without sewing skills.

We transform trousers into a skirt simply and tastefully

This is the simplest way of such transformation. But if you think about the future decor of the finished product, you will get a rather original thing that has no analogues. The procedure is as follows:

  • Take your old pants and check them for stains. If necessary, wash and iron well.
  • When the source material is ready, you need to decide on the length of the future product. Make a mark and trim off any excess.

Important! If your pants are a little big, you will first need to rip them along the side seam, then trim and sew them in.

  • Open the inner side seams.
  • Sew both legs into one to create a skirt.
  • Using a sewing machine, fold and stitch the bottom of the finished product.

Your new skirt is ready! You can wear it as is, and if you wish, decorate it with various inserts, decorative patches, beads and sequins.

Transforming jeans into a skirt

Today, most people of different ages wear jeans. Therefore, they collect such a quantity that sometimes some models can lie on the far shelves of the closet, never having waited for their “release”. In order to give them a second life, you can sew a skirt from trousers with your own hands:

  1. You need, as in the previous method, to begin with, decide on the desired length of the future product, and then carefully trim the legs.
  2. Next, rip out the inner side seams in the same way and sew the pant legs together.

That's it, your denim skirt is ready! The only thing left to do is decor. In this case, everything depends solely on your imagination and taste preferences.

Important! This item can be decorated with additional patch pockets, frills, fringe, beads, sequins or stripes.

We sew a skirt from men's trousers

If your boyfriend or husband has pants that he no longer wears, you can make a stylish skirt out of them:

  1. To begin with, the trousers need to be sewn along the hips to the size you need. To do this, you should rip them apart along the side seam, cut off the excess and stitch again.
  2. Further actions are absolutely the same as in the previous options: decide on the length, trim off the excess, rip out the internal side seams, sew the trouser legs and decorate the finished product.

Converting trousers into a pencil skirt

In order to change trousers into a skirt, you will need:

  • Old pants;

Important! In order to sew a pencil skirt, the trousers must have a high rise or be several sizes larger.

  • Scissors;
  • Tailor's pins;
  • Needle;
  • Seam ripper;
  • Tape measure;
  • Threads;
  • Decorative fittings or patches (optional).

Let's get to work.

  • Trim the pants along the inside side seam.

Important! If you are working with pants that are several sizes larger, you will need to trim the outer side seams as well.

  • At this stage you need to cut off the codpiece. This should be done where the fabric begins to lie flat.
  • Fold the finished piece in half.
  • Sew a seam along the entire length of the workpiece.
  • Take the pant legs and fold them so that they form a single piece.
  • Stepping back 1-1.5 centimeters from the edge, sew all parts along the length of the workpiece.

Important! It is best to make a stitch closer to the edge of the future product along a ready-made seam using a sewing machine or by laying stitches yourself.

  • Turn the skirt inside out and place right sides together. Secure with pins.
  • Try on the product and correct any defects.

Important! You can attach the finished skirt to the one you just sewed so that you can check the correctness of the tailoring and cut off the excess.

  • Once you have cut off the excess fabric and the imperfections have been eliminated, you can begin stitching the edges.

Important! To make it easier for you to stitch and the fabric to lay flat, you can fasten the parts with pins.

  • Fold the bottom edge 1-2 centimeters and stitch it.

Your pencil skirt is ready.

Important! If you want to make it more extraordinary and feminine, you can sew small ruffles at the bottom of the product.

We sew a skirt from two pairs of trousers

If, while cleaning out your closet, you find two pairs of unnecessary trousers, you can repurpose them into a fashionable maxi-length skirt, which is very popular today. In order to sew a skirt from trousers with your own hands, you need to follow the following procedure:

  • Take your pants and open them along the inside and outside seams.
  • For one of the pairs, it is necessary to cut off the upper part, approximately to the pockets.
  • In the second pair, the legs need to be folded so that you get a triangle.
  • The first pair of trousers must be placed inside the second.
  • Fold the hems over the raw edges. Align them and secure with tailor's pins.

Important! Please note that the bottom line of the product should be smooth.

  • Using a sewing machine, sew the hems.
  • Turn the resulting product inside out and cut off any excess pieces of fabric.
  • Trim the finished skirt to your desired length.
  • You can leave the bottom raw or make a hem and stitch it.

Your skirt is ready. You can now safely wear it and enjoy the appearance of a new and very extraordinary item in your wardrobe.

The first method is classic. Using these instructions, you can sew your own jeans skirt to knee length, slightly lower or slightly higher, a straight skirt, slightly tapered or slightly flared. The length of the skirt depends on your desire. Width - depends on the cut of the jeans and the width of the wedges you will insert into the skirt. Narrow jeans with narrow wedges (or one in the front) will make a pencil skirt, flared jeans with wide wedges will make an A-shaped skirt, or a bell skirt. For a straight or slightly tapered model, you don’t have to insert the wedge at the back: the resulting cut will act as a slot. You can hem the bottom of the skirt or leave it unfinished.

So, you will need:

A pair of jeans;

Tailor's scissors;

Pins;

Steamer;

Sewing machine and thread.

1. Decide on the length of the future skirt, add about 3 cm and cut the jeans legs to the desired length.

2. Open the crotch seams of the trousers.

3. Open the middle seams at the front and back.

4. Place the pant leg pieces one on top of the other, trying to form a flat sheet. Please note: if you do not open the middle seams too high, you will end up with a more flared skirt. If you pick up the seams higher and overlap more, you can create a narrower skirt.

5. Sew the seams front and back.

6. From the cut pieces of the legs, cut out 2 pieces for the wedges. If you want to leave the cut at the back as a slot, you will need 1 piece.

7. Place the wedge fabric from the back to the front of the skirt, as shown in the photo. Pin it with pins.

8. Sew the piece to the front along the remaining stitching lines of the jeans.

9. Repeat for the back of the skirt unless you want to leave a slit. If you are leaving a vent, finish the edges of the slit by stitching along the remaining stitching lines of the jeans.

10. Trim the excess fabric from the inside.

11. Trim the bottom of the skirt.

12. Finish the bottom if desired.

2. Jeans skirt - version with a wedge with a seam: master class

In general, this option for turning jeans into a skirt is similar to the classic one described above. The difference is in the wedges: if you cut them from the section of the legs with a seam, the skirt turns out a little different.

You will need:

A pair of jeans;

Steamer;

Scissors;

Pins;

Sewing machine and thread.

1. Decide on the length of the skirt and cut the legs.

2. Open the crotch seams and partly the center seams.

3. Cut wedges from the cut pant legs as shown in the photo. Pin one wedge to the front of the skirt.

4. Sew the wedge along the remaining seam lines.

5. At the back, design the wedge a little differently - see photo.

6. Sew the wedge to the back and you're done.

P.S. Using the same principle, you can sew from jeans maxi skirt. For this you will need two pairs of jeans that match the color. In this case, long wedges are cut from the legs of the second pair of jeans.

3. Making a denim miniskirt with slits from jeans: master class

This option is suitable for a mini skirt. It is better to make such a skirt from fairly loose jeans with a not too low rise. The bottom of the skirt can be left untreated and even slightly frayed on purpose.

You don't have to be a professional dressmaker to do this. It is enough to use their techniques and in just an hour and a half you can get excellent results.

What will you need for this? Sewing machine, iron with steamer, ruler, chalk, scissors, needle, matching thread and tailor's ripper and pins.

How to taper your pants correctly

To narrow women's trousers like the pros do, you shouldn't make the mistake that almost all beginners make. You will have to remove unnecessary width not only from the side seams, but from the inside seams, while maintaining the symmetry of the existing cut. Otherwise, achieving a perfect fit is simply impossible. And do not neglect intermediate steps - such as basting or steaming, only in this case, the result of the work will please you.

So. Turn the pants inside out and carefully open the hem, then open the side and inseams. If you are tapering your trousers along the entire length, it will not be a bad idea to rip out part of the crotch seam. Then steam the seams properly and let the fabric dry.

Now start marking. Measure along the bottom edge of the trouser leg the width you need, but be sure to maintain symmetry, retreating an equal number of centimeters from the edges. Now draw a thin line with chalk from the markings on the bottom edge to the hip line, repeating the direction of the original seams.

It is necessary to make a basting along the intended line - with small, neat stitches, making sure that the front and back panels do not move. For reliability, they can be fastened with simple tailor's pins.

How to make tapered pants

After you have swept the model, you must try it on. Put on your trousers and carefully examine the result of the work - you can correct it at this stage. Properly tapered trousers should fit like a glove. The easiest way to achieve this is if the fabric contains elastane, it will provide flexibility and good fit. But you need to pay special attention to natural cotton or wool, in which case a good fit will have to be achieved through precisely laid seams.

Professional dressmakers use a simple technique when trying on clothes that allows them to fit the item perfectly to the figure. Put your trousers on inside out and you'll see exactly where you can remove and where you need to add.

If you are satisfied with the result, all that remains is to sew the seams along the basting, get rid of it and carefully finish the edges. Cut off all excess, stepping back one and a half centimeters from the new seams. If you do not rely on the accuracy of your eye, draw an auxiliary line and cut along it. Now the edges must be processed using an overlocker or a zig-zag seam and the seams carefully smoothed out.

Fold the hem under the bottom without changing its width and secure it carefully with a blind or velvet seam. Your new tapered trousers were made like in the best tailor!

How to Taper Dress Pants

To turn any model into stylish “cigarettes” or “pipes” you need to take into account several professional nuances. Wide from the hip and throughout the valley, you can narrow classic trousers as you want using the basic techniques described above. But before you get down to business, keep in mind that such models should be sewn in strictly repeating the silhouette lines.

In the case of complex models and major alterations, be sure to open the crotch seam; it can be easily restored by laying a double stitch along the same lines at the end of the work. This way you can proportionally reduce the volume in the hips and get rid of unattractive creases and folds.

To ensure that the silhouette of the finished model fits your figure exactly, be sure to mark the knee line even at the marking stage. To do this, measure the distance from it to the waist - it is different for each figure - and set it aside from the model’s belt. This mark will allow you to find the correct position of the new seams, now smoothly connect it with the marks on the bottom edge.

This is especially important if you want to tape your pants at the bottom like banana or cigarette styles. Measure the volume of your knee with a measuring tape, divide it in half and add 2-3 centimeters for the freedom of fit. Strictly symmetrically set this length along the knee line and draw a smooth line to the model’s waist.

The width of the model at the hips can be adjusted to your own parameters. But the width of the bottom edge in this case should remain no more than 15-18 centimeters. Set it aside in the same strictly symmetrical manner relative to the side and internal seams and sweep it carefully. It is these proportions that will ensure the desired fit and excellent fit.

Instructions

Open the crotch and center seams and remove any loose threads. Wash and dry the old ones. Iron the resulting workpiece through damp gauze. It is advisable to cut off all frayed seams, otherwise in a new product they run the risk of unraveling after the first wash. You can cut off excess fabric from the crotch seam or, placing one piece on top of another, simply stitch them together. If the width of the skirt is not enough after this, you will need to insert a wedge.

Decide on the length and model of the future skirt. Lay the workpiece on the table. Baste and sew the middle seam. If the skirt is planned to be very short, it will be enough to cut off the trouser legs and process the bottom edge (be sure to leave 2-3 cm for finishing). You can also fluff the denim along the bottom with fringe, sew on a flounce, braid or lace.

If you plan to do skirt long, you will need to insert a wedge. For this purpose, you can cut out pieces from cut-off trouser legs or select another fabric. The wedge is like a triangle. Inserts made of translucent fabric, linen, or velvet look good. Cut out a wedge of the required size. Sweep it in and try on the product. Stitch the seams and finish the edges with a zigzag stitch.

If the skirt turns out to be narrow, be sure to leave slits. Perform them on the side or front of the skirt. Finish the edges of the cuts with lace or trim the wedge from.

Helpful advice

It’s better not to change the waistband of trousers, because... this is quite difficult, and not every machine can sew denim in several folds. If you still decide to do this, then it is better not to sew in a new belt, but to make a “skirt on the hips” without a belt at all.

Denim The style is very bright, cheerful and youthful. Almost everything is allowed in it: lacing, fringe, artificial fraying of things. skirt or denim trousers can also be decorated in different ways. You can also update your denim wardrobe by turning old jeans into a skirt. Moreover, the shorter the skirt, the more stylish you will look.

  • Old jeans
  • Scissors

Old, tired or ill-fitting jeans are an excellent material for creativity. You can make a lot of interesting things from them - pillows, wallets, bags, vests, soft toys. But the easiest and most interesting thing is to sew a fashionable skirt from them. Choose the appropriate style, stock up on scraps of fabric and accessories and get to work.

You will need

  • - sewing machine;
  • - scraps of fabric;
  • - elastic lace;
  • - rhinestones;
  • - braid;
  • - embroidery threads;
  • - textile paints.

Instructions

You don't need to have outstanding tailoring skills to sew a denim skirt. There is no need to draw up paper patterns. Feel free to improvise, try on the item as often as possible and focus solely on your own taste.

Do you like a longer skirt? Take a cotton scarf of any suitable color and cut it diagonally. Sew the halves of the scarf to the edge of the skirt with an overlap. You can sew on both the front and back sides - the seam may well be an additional decorative detail. For additional decoration along the seam, the new skirt can be trimmed with matching or contrasting color braid.

It’s easy to make an A-line skirt. Lay the jeans out on a flat surface, measure the desired length of the skirt and cut the legs to that length. Open the crotch seam. Take a fabric (viscose or cotton is best), place it on the wrong side and pin it with pins so that the fabric forms a wedge. Such wedges will be located on the front and back panels of the future skirt. Sew the fabric. The bottom of the skirt does not need to be hemmed; slight negligence looks very stylish. This skirt can be complemented with a massive buckle, just on the hips.

If you have some stretch jeans that are getting a little small, remake the skirt to fit. Cut the legs according to the length of the future skirt. Open the crotch and side seams. Sew the crotch seam, leaving a small vent at the bottom. Measure a strip of elastic fabric and elastic wide lace equal to the length of the skirt. Place the lace on the fabric and sew it to the sides of the skirt from the inside out. You will get lace inserts on the sides. The width of the insert is adjustable depending on the size of the skirt.

A new skirt can be decorated with embroidery, rhinestones or appliqué. You can even paint it! Take a thin brush, sponge and silver or gold textile paint. Think over a decor idea. Use a sponge to create the effect of blurry spots, and with a brush you can draw a pattern. After processing, dry the fabric and iron it with a hot iron.

Skirts are one of the important components of a woman's wardrobe. If you wish, you can complement your wardrobe with a new designer skirt, which is easy to sew yourself, if, of course, you have basic knowledge of cutting and sewing. The easiest way to sew skirt possible by altering trousers.

You will need

  • - Trousers;
  • - a thread;
  • - needle;
  • - scissors;
  • - sewing machine;
  • - a piece of fabric.

Instructions

Cut off trousers to the length you want to get skirt. Open the inside seams of both legs. The side seams of the trouser legs should not be ripped out, since they will serve as the same seams of the skirt.

Using a sewing machine, sew together the two front parts of the opened legs. Do the same with the two back pieces. Thus, you will get a skirt with four seams: two side, front and back. To hide the front seam, decorate it. These can be buttons, embroidery, braid, lace, etc.

Prepare a piece of fabric that you think will match the color scheme of the yoke. It will later serve as a flounce for the skirt. The width of this piece should be fifteen centimeters wider than the yoke; determine the length of the future shuttlecock yourself. If you want to sew a short skirt, prepare one such piece of fabric. For a long skirt, prepare three future flounces, and the width of the next flounce should be twenty centimeters larger than the previous one.

Finish the top cut edge, which will be sewn to the yoke, with an overlocker or a stitch that replaces it. Then, using a “forward needle” stitch, baste the top of the shuttlecock, gather it into folds, carefully tightening the thread you used to baste. Distribute the folds evenly. Make sure that the resulting circumference of the flounce coincides with the circumference of the yoke.

Turn the yoke and flounce inside out and stitch both parts together using a sewing machine. To ensure that the seam is neat and the parts of the product are sewn together evenly, before stitching them with a machine, baste the shuttlecock to the yoke using a needle and thread. Carefully finish the bottom edge. You have a short skirt ready. If you want to sew a long skirt, perform the same actions with the next two shuttlecocks.

I really want to have a couple of original things in my wardrobe. But, unfortunately, there is not always enough money for this. Make fashionable outfits yourself. For example, you can make a beautiful skirt for romantic dates from old, worn jeans.

You will need

  • - old blue jeans;
  • - from half a meter of panne velvet;
  • - threads;
  • - scissors;
  • - sewing machine;
  • - chalk or piece of soap;
  • - needles.

In this article, I will tell you how simply and creatively you can decorate a simple denim skirt so that it becomes fashionable and beautiful.

Sew a skirt yourself

By sewing a skirt yourself, you will be completely confident in its uniqueness. You can make it oblique, torn, or come up with your own style. This is easy to do if you have plain denim. Of course, this material is difficult to find on sale, but a denim skirt can be made from old denim material, such as shorts or trousers. They just need to be cut in the right places, fit according to the pattern and sewed together.

Denim skirt with lace

As you know, lace is a romantic element of clothing decoration. Obviously, the use of lace as decorative elements in denim skirts provides a very wide scope for realizing your ideas. By skillfully using the color of lace and additional accessories, you can create both delicate, innocent images and more daring, daring and defiant models. Although you can try to create a non-standard, but still business image.

Old skirt: new life

The biggest problem with old yuks is that they eventually just get boring. Even the most favorite skirts after a while want to be replaced with new ones or at least updated. If you hate throwing away weird skirts, use the following tips for redesigning them.

As you know, a skirt is the only item of clothing on which holes will not look indecent. On the contrary, many skirt owners love to rip their skirts. Surprisingly, skirts with holes always look very stylish.

Decorate a denim skirt with rhinestones

The first option is applications. Today there are a huge number of designs of different structures and colors. Depending on the color of the jeans, you can choose leather or fur appliques, with drawings or simply abstraction. If none of the applications in the store suits you, you can safely draw your own or simply copy it from your favorite magazine or newspaper. In order for the applique to sit firmly on the fabric, you need to stitch it with threads (in the color of the jeans) or glue it securely by ironing it over the surfaces on both sides.

The second option for beautifully decorating a denim skirt is a pattern embroidered with thread. It is, of course, much more complicated than the first one, and is suitable only for those girls and women who love and know how to embroider, because for this it is necessary not only to transfer the design to, but also then carefully embroider it with the threads you like. But for true professionals it will not be difficult - just half an hour of work and the skirt will shine with new colors.

And the last design option for a denim skirt is, of course, beads and rhinestones. A lot of denim items today are decorated in this way, because the idea is fresh and very original. To decorate a skirt with beads, you also need to outline a pattern in advance, which will subsequently be embroidered. As for rhinestones, there are both whole applications and individual “droplets”. It all depends on your preferences and taste.

Butterfly

Butterflies are a stylish element, relevant for girls. From one pair of old jeans you can make a dozen different butterflies that you can sew on your skirt. It will look feminine and romantic, but modest and discreet.
